Westkapelle is located on the westernmost tip of Walcheren and is recognizable by its striking lighthouse. The sturdy and proud working-class village has long been a very private community and was traditionally populated by dike workers. Westkapelle, situated behind the five centuries old Westkapel sea dike, has a very eventful history. Due to the village's location at the tip of Walcheren, the sea was a regular threat here. Nowadays, Westkapelle is also known for the unique and finely crafted Zeeland jewelry made there. In Westkapelle there is a centuries-old lighthouse , which still serves as a beacon for shipping. The fifty-meter high lighthouse is not only a beacon at night for shipping; its light can be seen from most villages on Walcheren. Today the lighthouse can be climbed. When visiting the Dijk- en Oorlogsmuseum Het Polderhuis wordt je meegenomen in de roerige geschiedenis van Westkapelle en Walcheren. The capital of Zeeland has a rich past and it is still visible. Middelburg originated in the 9th-centurye , when the Vikings entered Europe. At the time of the VOC, Middelburg was the second most important city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. In 200 years, over 300 new ships were built in the shipyards. These ships sailed to Asia to trade in spices, textiles and porcelain, among other things. In the center of Middelburg you can still see buildings that remind you of this golden period. Middelburg is truly a town with its own character. There are intimate little squares, quaint streets, cozy cafes and, in addition to the big chain stores, you will also find unusual boutiques, galleries and art shops. The Abbey complex is located in the middle of the city and consists of a more or less circular building with four large and one small tower and several gates with a square in the middle, the Abbey Square, with large trees. Many festivals are held here every year. Middelburg's old town hall is located on the Markt in Middelburg. The Lange Jan is one of the 3 towers of the Abbey complex. The tower is 90 meters high and has 207 steps. On clear days you have a wonderful view over Walcheren. Open daily in the summer months De kuiperspoort is a well hidden and picturesque street with old warehouses, restored houses, stepped gables and beautiful details. The town of Domburg is the oldest seaside resort on the Walcheren coast. In the early 20th century, many artists came to Domburg for inspiration. Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop are the most famous. The center has many cozy terraces, restaurants and stores. These stores are open 7 days a week throughout the year. A visit to Domburg is definitely worthwhile.

Vlissingen

On the shores of the Westerschelde is Vlissingen, a city with a maritime past and present. Visit Vlissingen to get a breath of fresh air on the longest sea promenade in the Netherlands, where you can almost touch the passing ships!

There is plenty to do on the boulevard. On one side of the promenade you stand eye to eye with naval hero Michiel de Ruijter, on the other side you can hear the sounds of the wind organ. In the middle, terraces and restaurants offer the necessary relaxation. To get to know Vlissingen and the maritime history of Zeeland better, a visit to the MuZEEum is highly recommended. Among other things, the MuZEEum is located in the Lampsinshuis. A unique feature of the Lampsinshuis is the observation tower. In the 17th century, shipowner Cornelis Lampsins watched his ships depart and arrive here. Now you can still enjoy a beautiful view of the sea from here.

A nice sea view is also available from the crow's nest, part of the Arsenal. This maritime attraction center is all about pirates and sea creatures. Ideal for a day out with the family.
